The Ethiopia Orthodox Church was established at the beginning of the fourth century, making it one of the oldest established churches in the world.

The most striking feature of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, is the presence of a replica of the Ark of the Covenant (locally known as Tabot) in the Holy of Holies of each church, and which only priests and/or deacons are allowed to see and handle. With religion playing such an important role in Ethiopian society, festivals and ceremonies have a considerable share in the yearly calendar. The following are the most famous festivals:

  • Timqat (Epiphany), which falls on the 19th of January is the day when Christians celebrate the baptism of Christ
  • Fasika (Easter), is a festival that follows a fasting period of 55 days
  • Masqal is said to be in memory of the finding of the true cross by Empress Eleni of Ethiopia and
  • Ghenna officially known by the Church as Baal Lidet (Ethiopian Christmas)is on the 7th of January.
