Camping in Ethiopia is just about the only way to visit the most beautiful, undeveloped and unspoiled areas of the country, whether in the national parks or other rural areas.

Regarding matters of security, in the national parks and most highland areas, campers may pitch a tent, climb in, and enjoy a good night?s sleep, untroubled by worries of unwelcome night visitors intent on thievery or worse. Country people are, for the most part, pacific, hospitable and cooperative, though, sometimes, they are not immune to curiosity, and campers should not be surprised to have an audience as they go about their "bizarre" business of setting up tents, camp stoves, and air mattresses. But it is wise not to leave any portable items outside the tent after turning in for the night.

Note on routes: the direction Harar and Dire Dawa have questionable security and may be unsuitable for camping. Before leaving Addis Ababa seek informed local opinion on current conditions.
