The cool zone consists of the central parts of the western and eastern sections of the northwestern plateau and a small area around Harar. The terrain in these areas is generally above 2,400 meters in elevation; average daily temperature ranges from near freezing to 16°, in March, April and May, the warmest months. Throughout the year, the midday warmth diminishes quickly by the afternoon, and nights are usually cold. During most months, light frost often forms at night and snow occurs at the highest elevations.

Many tourists are surprised at how cool it can be in the Ethiopian highlands. Be prepared for sudden cold weather and mountain storms. During the day in the dry season, lightweight clothing is suitable, but it is advisable to carry a lightweight sweater, as well. A sweater or a warm jacket is useful for evenings. For chilly days in the Ethiopian rainy season, which lasts from around July to October, one can be comfortable in light, woolen clothing.
