Earlier Adefa later known as Lalibela, named after the king of the same with a peak around 11th century, the people of Lalibela devoted themselves to the construction of new churches and monasteries sculpted out of solid volcanic rock which today is enlisted as a world heritage site by Unesco.

Even though much of Axum's history is still shrouded in semi-darkness, it is clear that Axum was and still is the captial of the Christianity religion, reaching it's peak at the reign of Ezana in the 4th century and upheld its position for about 12 centuries.

There are two different, but compatible, legends regarding the origin of the people of Ethiopia.
