Undoubtedly Lalibela is site of one of the Wonders (the Eighth, you may call it) of the World, Lalibela owes its fame to the incredibly fashioned Lalibela churches, all carved out of red solid volcanic rock by carpenters, with the help, during the night, of angels, as legend has it. Such belief may be scoffed at, but let us accept it as a metaphor for the awe with which they strike the beholder, a site which today is enlisted as a world heritage site by Unesco. Ethiopian legend has it that the famous Church of St. Mary of Zion in Axum is the repository of the Ark of the Covenant. Axum is equally, if not more, mysterious for the seven monolithic stelae fashioned out solid granite. The biggest monolith (and the largest in the world), measures over thirty-three meters (108 feet) and weighing about 500 tons. Tags: Ethiopia Historical Axum History Religional UNESCO |

External impacts led to the temporarily failure of realization of Emperor Tewodros II vision of Ethiopia, when he shot himself during the siege of Maqdala in 1867. Shouldering his vision Emperor Menilik II is credited also for creating modern day Ethiopia and led the battle of Adowa on March 1st 1896, which reversed the Italian attempt to colonize the country. Truely clash of religions has been and still is the shaping factor of our world and societies, and Ethiopia is not an exception from that rule. Jesuits made little headway in 15th century to be banished in the 17th by King Fasiledus, who established the then capital of Ethiopia, Gondar. Right before that, in the same century, Ahmed Ibn Ibrahim (Gragn) of Somali occupied Ethiopian highlands heading a Moslem army, strongly backed by Ottoman Turkey. Even though much of Axum's history is still shrouded in semi-darkness, it is clear that Axum was and still is the captial of the Christianity religion, reaching it's peak at the reign of Ezana in the 4th century and upheld its position for about 12 centuries.
