Ethiopia's economy is largely based on agriculture, which is undertaken with a primitive farming system, mostly for subsistence. The agricultural sector accounts for 85% of the total employment, more than half of the country?s GDP and 90% of its exports. Because of this, the performance of the economy is determined by the rain-fed agriculture. GDP growth is highest in years with good rains (1995/96, 2000/01) and lowest in years without good rains (1997/98, 2002/3).
