There are nine regional governments that are demarcated linguistically and two self-governing city administrations. These are Oromia, with a population of 23,704,000 and Amhara, with a population of 17,203,000. The capitals of the regional governments are Adama and Bahir Dar respectively. Tigray has a population approximately of 3,901,000 and its capital is Meqelle. Afar has a population of 1,272,000; Somale 3,898,000; Benishangul-Gumuz 565,000, and their capitals are Asaita, Jigjiga and Asosa, respectively. The Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region has a population of 13,293,000, and its capital is Awassa. Gambela has a population of 222,000; Harari 172,000; Addis Ababa 2,646,000; and Diredawa, 342,000. At present, there are 1000 towns, 604 woredas and 22,351 kebeles (20,730 of which are rural) in the country. |
