The Omotic speakers were traditionally organized into small kingdoms, notably those of Kaffa and Janjero. Mainly agriculturalists, they in general still adhere to a traditional animist faith. Of the Omotic speakers, the Konso and the Surma are particularly interesting for their artistry. Of particular interest are the wooden totems erected by the Konso over the graves of the dead.
