Known forAddis Ababa, which in Amharic-the official language of Ethiopia- means “New Flower”, is the capital and largest city of Ethiopia. Established as a city in 1878, by Menelik II then King of Shewa, who wanted a new seat of power away from his old capital, Ankober. Later, Emperor Haile Selassie I, KING of kings and the lion of Judah brought sparkling success to the city when the new city became the center of his pan-African diplomacy. Addis Ababa was chosen in 1958 as the headquarters of the United Nation Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and, in 1963, as head quarters of the Organization of African Unity. (OAU). The new city became the center of much diplomacy in Africa, and is recognized as the unofficial capital of Africa. Today, Addis Ababa, which bears the imprint of many of these past developments, is a major metropolis, with an estimated population 3-4 million people and a “rich cultural mosaic.”
