Place of origin indeed entails the culture of costumes where we see the highlanders as contrary to the lowlanders, bear costumes more cladly and based on cotton.

The materials employed can be categoriezed into three major parts. The basic costume of the highlanders (shared particularly by the Amhara, the Tigreans and the Oromo), whether everyday or occasional, is the shamma (literally cloth), a term which refers to the material (cotton) and its making (homespun) and made usually by artisans collectively known in Amharic by the name shemmane (weavers).

The kemis is a full-length, plain or (usually) colorfully embroidered dress worn by women. The net'ela, a single-ply, about 1? x 2? meters square, lightweight shawl and the kuta, a two-ply shawl (about the same area as the net'ela) are common to both men and women, particularly on holidays.

Another type of costume, is the gabi (a thick, multi-plyed, almost blanket-like cloth), usually worn for warmth, whether in bed or out of bed. The much thicker and heavier version, usually used as bed cover or worn on special ceremonies by priests and the nobility, is The bulluko, often embroidered at the narrow ends with deep red, factory-made thread. Another costume is the burnos (burnoose), made out of sheep's wool.
