Within christianity, traditional costumes are most elaborate and colorful, including dresses, capes, hats, umbrellas. Within christianity, traditional costumes are most elaborate and colorful in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Whether on holidays or everyday liturgical rites, priests wear (depending on the offices they occupy) multi-colored dresses and differently fashioned capes and brimless, flat-topped and round hats. Gorgeously colored and embroidered umbrellas are held above the heads of priests and deacons during church services. Particularly impressive are the costumes worn during the Ethiopian Epiphany (January 19) and the Feast of the Cross (September 27). On ordinary occasions priests wear long, black dresses with matching huts, with gold-plated or silver crosses hanging around their necks and, sometimes, the shemma.
