DescriptionOn the roof of Africa, where the Nile has its source, lies an ancient Christian country whose civilisation dates back thousands of years: Ethiopia, the legendary domain of the Queen of Sheba, a land of dramatic scenery and exotic birdlife. It was in Ethiopia that the Kingdom of Diamat once flourished, followed – around the time of Christ – by the Empire of Axum, whose kings converted to Christianity around 330 AD. A later dynasty toiled over a series of rock-hewn churches at Lalibela, a “New Jerusalem”, and a Christian state was established that resisted both Moslem invasion and European imperialist expansion. Indeed, Ethiopia is one of the very few countries on the African continent to have escaped the yoke of colonialism. Both Lalibela and Axum feature prominently on our itinerary; the former, built by the Zagwe emperor Lalibela in the 12th century “with the help of angels”, comprises eleven towering churches carved out of the rock face. Axum’s major sights include the church of St Mary of Zion, the holiest sanctuary in Ethiopia, said to contain the Ark of Covenant. Addis Ababa has an equally weighty claim to fame: the National Museum houses the skeletal remains of arguably our earliest ancestor, the three and a half million year old “Lucy”. Ethiopia’s natural landscape is, at times, breath-taking. The vast expanse of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, is dotted with dozens of islands that give shelter to half-concealed churches and monasteries, often adorned with beautiful paintings. Here we will see local and migratory birds in abundance, just as at Awasa, the prettiest of lakes, we will discover waters teeming with fish and bird life. We will spend one night at Wondo Guenet, the former summer residence of Emperor Haile Selassie, in an area of superb primeval forest where it is possible to bathe in hot springs. At Lake Awasa in the Rift Valley, the gardens of our hotel are home to black and white colobus monkeys. Accommodation is in hotels of good standard (or the best available), all with private facilities, although the plumbing can be somewhat erratic at times. All our time in Ethiopia is passed in the upland areas of the country at altitudes of between 4,000 and 8,000 feet. Addis Ababa itself is 8,000 feet above sea-level.
